Setting the Scene

For the past year or so, my husband and I have been hard at work on a house we bought, a property of some five-and-a-half acres which we named "Shirefeld," after the Hobbit-usage: "county field." Since that's what it is.

Our house is the Black Cat, since we have no prancing ponies, green dragons, or golden perches. But we do have a black cat. And two Siamese. And thirty chickens.
And we had six wonderful children. But sadly, this past summer, there was an accident, and now we are reduced unwillingly to five. And pictures of my son Joshua hang in every room of this house, because we will never forget him.

Right now this house is our work of art, and as of this month, we embark on extensive rennovation. I may post some of our adventures here.

Or I may simply post about beauty and order, since there will be only the hidden sort of beauty and the "eventual" sort of order here for quite some time.

this is a lovely idea, regina...

have you read Edith Schaeffer's book "Hidden Art"? (at least, that's what it was called when I read it -- now I think it's "The Hidden Art of Homemaking" -- don't know how much of the content has changed...)

I would send you my copy, but someone borrowed it, then moved and took it with them and refuses to return it. Sigh...

But you might want to track it down; I think you would love it.

Regina~
I came to your blog by way of Meredith at Like Mercahnt Ships to read your thoughts on wodden toys.

I am so sorry for your loss, the death of your son is very heartbreaking. I have also experienced to unexpected death of a child. Eight years ago our infant son caught a virus that essentially caused a heart-attack that his little body was unable to fight.
God is good and I pray He will hold you firmly in His righteous right hand as you continue in this journey of grief.

What a beautiful home you have! Your property is gorgeous! Great name, btw. I was just telling my husband this morning of my brand new dream to own a nice piece of land somewhere out in the country and raise children and chickens. What a coincidence! Your son and your entire family will be in my prayers.

Roberta - thank you so much for posting and for sharing. May He bless you in your journey too. I do believe it is not something you ever "get over." But with His grace we carry on.
Peace to you and your family.

Dear Regina,

I was glad to find your blog, which was mentioned by Maclin Horton on the C&T blog. I've been reading your articles and books since C&T and am always glad to see anything new that you have written.

My 19 yo daughter and I have especially enjoyed your novels and I always recommend them to friends (I'm the person in our homeschool group that is the official "book recommender") as being far above most of what is being written these days. It's lovely to find novels that are written for the sake of the story, which are intrinsically moral and Catholic instead of novels that are written to preach, with a bit of story tacked on. We are eagerly awaiting your next.

We were very saddened to hear about Joshua's death and have been praying for you ever since. In fact I was just thinking about you and praying for you this weekend when I saw "Angel in the Waters" in the bookstore at the retreat house where I was spending the weekend.

Now I have to think of what to call myself since I see there's already a Janet here.

AMDG,
Janetktc
