New Little White Soul


All tired out after her baptism, little Polly slept soundly in her daddy's arms this past Sunday. Due to an uncommon foresight and sporadic burst of organization, her mother managed to find the family baptismal gown (which I wore for my own baptism), and have it cleaned and ready. Polly is the first of my children to ever wear the gown, which is silk with a chiffon overlay trimmed with two ribbon bows and tiny smocked pleats - simple yet so much nicer than anything I could make or buy today. And I am so grateful to the aunt who bequeathed it to me years ago, and to my guardian angel who helped me remember that I had it!

In our own baptismal news, I just realized that my husband will be baptized exactly four years and one month after the baptism of our three daughters. :)

By the by, I've been enjoying a new (to me) blog, Lentils and Rice and I think you'd like it. Although she's a determined declutterer, and you are more of a determined cozy hobbit hole sort of person (which is a compliment, if that's not clear), she has some anti-plastic, anti-junk ideas that you'd probably like. My mom finally pulled out two boxes of my baby toys to hand down to me--now that I have my fourth child! Parents and their basements!

The first part of organization is ineviably, paring down. And that brings with it the sometimes heartbreaking exercise of detaching yourself from things you once loved. (Yes, loved in the lower, materialistic sense, but nevertheless, loved.) What I do with Old Scapulars

A problem peculiar to serious Catholics ... what do you DO with old scapulars? When the strings tear apart and the images of our Lady start hanging -- you can't just throw them out, you have to burn them or bury them. I suspect most moms of large families have a little pile in the corner of their top bureau drawer of these little patches of cloth embroidered with Christ and Our Lady. Well, here's what I started doing with them: sewing them on the backs of my boys' overalls. This allows me to combine my hatred of name brand dressing ("What? You mean I pay you to advertise YOUR product?") with a desire for covert evangelism. See, the scapulars LOOK like those ubiquitous OshKosh tags at first glance -- but then you look again...
