Dolls Were A Pale Foreshadowing...



... of how much fun it is to have a baby girl.

That's what I discovered when I had one of my own. As someone who, as a child, had never liked playing with dolls or dressing up, I was amazed at how much fun it was to buy diminuitive sweaters and make small-scale dresses. Every day it's "the fun chore" to dress up little Polly.


And one thing I've found that's more fun that small hats, sweet bonnets and wee sweaters are these faux baby shoe-socks from Trumpette. I put them on the baby's feet over a pair of cotton tights and they never fall off, ever! They are the perfect finishing touch to just about any baby outfit. Especially when worn with those ubiquitous nebulous unisex outfits, these socks cue in everyone that "Yes, this is is a girl!" Check out these socks: they are worth the price. What a pretty baby! We have two girls (11 and 9) and three boys (7, 3 1/2 and 20 mos.) and I am due with #6 in June. My girls are SO hoping for a little sister, after 3 roughneck little brothers. Little Polly's picture put that little tug in my heart for another girl. It really is precious to dress those little girly girls. (Of course boys are gobs of fun and when they get older they don't get their feelings hurt as easily...) :o)

My Irish dance teacher had shoe-socks for her little girl that looked like Irish dance shoes! It was really cute, especially when she was old enough to run around the dance class and pretend to dance like the big girls.

The first part of organization is ineviably, paring down. And that brings with it the sometimes heartbreaking exercise of detaching yourself from things you once loved. What I do with Old Scapulars

A problem peculiar to serious Catholics ... what do you DO with old scapulars? When the strings tear apart and the images of our Lady start hanging -- you can't just throw them out, you have to burn them or bury them. I suspect most moms of large families have a little pile in the corner of their top bureau drawer of these little patches of cloth embroidered with Christ and Our Lady. Well, here's what I started doing with them: sewing them on the backs of my boys' overalls. This allows me to combine my hatred of name brand dressing ("What? You mean I pay you to advertise YOUR product?") with a desire for covert evangelism. See, the scapulars LOOK like those ubiquitous OshKosh tags at first glance -- but then you look again...
