Beautiful Order


I enjoyed this post by new blogger Sarah on "Beautiful Order." After spending a snowy day organizing all her children's toys, she discovered how "transient" such beauty is! But as she writes,

Well, there is a point in organizing our homes, in teaching our children about order and trying to make our homes beautiful. These things teach our children, and remind ourselves, that God created the world and all things in it in an orderly fashion, and He continues to create things of pure beauty all around us. We can honor and glorify Him by creating and ordering in our homes, which He has given us to care for. These lessons give us hope and encouragement during those times when everything is a mess and we slowly begin to bring order out of the chaos. These lessons will bless our children not only now but in their future vocations, whatever they may be. For these lessons will help them grow in understanding and appreciation for God's desire for order and beauty, and their mom's steadfast quest to follow His will.

That's really great! I know the kids feel better, more at peace, when everything is organized. I struggle because I'd like to keep everything organized for them all the time - all the colored pencils nicely sharpened, etc., but I know they'll take what they can get. :)

i am really enjoying this concept of making our homes art for our families. this has been on my mind a lot lately as i ponder whether blogging isn't a big time waster... thanks for sharing this. i have been feeling a little overloaded lately and you have given me something to consider. The first part of organization is ineviably, paring down. And that brings with it the sometimes heartbreaking exercise of detaching yourself from things you once loved. What I do with Old Scapulars

A problem peculiar to serious Catholics ... what do you DO with old scapulars? When the strings tear apart and the images of our Lady start hanging -- you can't just throw them out, you have to burn them or bury them. I suspect most moms of large families have a little pile in the corner of their top bureau drawer of these little patches of cloth embroidered with Christ and Our Lady. Well, here's what I started doing with them: sewing them on the backs of my boys' overalls. This allows me to combine my hatred of name brand dressing ("What? You mean I pay you to advertise YOUR product?") with a desire for covert evangelism. See, the scapulars LOOK like those ubiquitous OshKosh tags at first glance -- but then you look again...
