Joshua Memorial Bracelet


I've been meaning to post about this for a while. On Joshua's birthday just a few weeks ago, I received the most wonderful package. Kimberlee, a mother who makes jewelry, rosaries, and bracelets with her company Beads of Mercy (http://www.beadsofmercy.com/) had created a gemstone memorial bracelet of my son Joshua for me. She had spelled out Joshua's name in silver alphabet blocks separated by his birthstone (ruby), and attached charms for things that Joshua had loved the best: a knight in shining armor, a hammer, and a tiny train. She also added a small crown for the crown of glory in heaven, and a crucifix and Miraculous Medal. She included the explanation on a lovely card, along with a personal letter.

The bracelet is truly beautiful, and I'm told this generous woman has done this for others. So I wanted to post this to thank her and to encourage others to check out her jewelry. (I also posted about her in the article I wrote on Joshua's website, 20 Things You Can Do For Those Who Are Grieving.) Personally I think I might try to get a bracelet like this for my own mother for her birthday.

Regina, thank you for sharing both this and the link to your list of things to do for the grieving. I think many people struggle with wanting to help, but not wanting to intrude on the very private sorrow of those who are mourning.

You and your family have been in my prayers many times this past year. May God continue to grant you peace and healing.

How beautiful... Your family is an example to me of what it means to grieve as a Christian family. "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope," St. Paul wrote. I am learning from you. Our bathroom is decorated with Bessie Pease Guttman babies, and I have a basket of children's books about babies on the counter for little ones to look at while getting changed, dressed, etc. Angel in the Waters is kept in front and I pray for you every time I see it. Kimberlee and her family so very nice! I sent her an email not too long ago, asking about the cord rosaries one of her sons was making. My son was about to head off to Iraq, and I wanted him to have one. Her dear son made 5 of them and sent them to me! I was able to hand out some to Rob's friends, and kept one for myself.

What I do with Old Scapulars

A problem peculiar to serious Catholics ... what do you DO with old scapulars? When the strings tear apart and the images of our Lady start hanging -- you can't just throw them out, you have to burn them or bury them. I suspect most moms of large families have a little pile in the corner of their top bureau drawer of these little patches of cloth embroidered with Christ and Our Lady. Well, here's what I started doing with them: sewing them on the backs of my boys' overalls. This allows me to combine my hatred of name brand dressing ("What? You mean I pay you to advertise YOUR product?") with a desire for covert evangelism. See, the scapulars LOOK like those ubiquitous OshKosh tags at first glance -- but then you look again...
